3 Ways To Make Yourself Invisible When Leading Worship

Make yourself invisible when leading worship

As every good worship leader knows, it's not about you receiving the attention; it's about pointing people's attention to God. Ideally, you'd be virtually invisible. Our goal as worship leaders is to direct people's focus so much on God that we would fade into the background.

Here are 3 ways to make yourself invisible when leading worship:

1 | Step back from the mic

One practical way you can minimize your presence on stage is to simply step back from the microphone.

First, this works great when leading a song. Start off by leading people into a well known chorus and then step away from the microphone. Let your church lead the song. This helps to communicate that you are all (worship team included) part of the church and you're there for the same reason: to worship God. When you step back from the mic, you no longer have a volume advantage. You are simply singing with everyone else.

Second, step back from the mic during instrumental sections. When you crowd the mic while you aren't speaking or singing, your body language draws attention to you. People anticipate what you're about to say and look to you for direction. So, if you're not using the mic, step away from it.

2 | Point people to God

In everything you do, point people to God. Always return the focus to him. If people clap during your time of worship, remind everyone that that praise is directed towards God. Constantly remind your church that you aren't singing to each other, you are singing to God.

This goes for how you interact off stage as well. If someone compliments you, point them back to God. Ask them how they saw God move during your time of worship.

3 | Lead with your church in mind

Keep your church in the forefront of your mind when you lead. Sing songs in keys they can sing in. Don't do complex vocal runs. Always ask the question: how is this going to help my church respond to what God is doing in their lives?
