3 Keys To Building A Healthy Worship Team Culture

On a scale from 1-10, how would you rate your worship team culture? Do people generally get along? Do they respect each other?

A bad worship team culture can not only hurt the team members, but also the church (the worship team is leading the church on Sundays after all).

So, how do you build a healthy worship team culture?

Here are 3 keys to building a healthy worship team culture:

1 | Clear expectations

A healthy worship team culture starts with clear expectations. Too often, leaders of worship teams complain about worship teams not meeting expectations but THEY don't even know what the expectations are!

If you are a worship team leader, YOU have to know what the expectations are in order to communicate them to your team. What do you want for your team? In an ideal world, what would your worship team do? Would they come to rehearsal on time? Would they have their music memorized? Make a list of your vision for your worship team!

Then, actually communicate those expectations! You can't be mad at people who aren't living up to a standard you've never communicated to them.

2 | Consequences for not meeting those expectations

Here's the hard part. Having a healthy worship team culture sometimes means having to make hard choices. Sometimes it means saying "I'm sorry. You didn't show up to rehearsal. You can't play on Sunday." Yes, there is grace that needs to be displayed throughout the process. But your actions portray your expectations more than your words ever can.

If you don't hold people to the expectations you set, the rest of the team will start to wonder whether they're real expectations or not.

3 | Relationships that extend beyond simply "being a band"

You are not just a worship band. You are a worship team. And most importantly, you are all part of the Church that shares the same vision - you are brothers and sisters in the family of God!

That doesn't mean that you have to be best friends. You don't have to spend every waking moment with each other to have a good relationship. You simply have to respect each other and understand that what you're doing is about much more than just playing music.
