3 Reasons Your Church Isn't Singing (That You Can Fix)
How well does your church sing when you lead worship?
We all long for "congregational engagement."
As a church, one of the ways we worship together is through singing. So, it would be nice if everyone was involved in the process.
And there are reasons that we can't control that people don't sing. But, there are a few things you CAN do to make sure that, if people are ready, they're able to sing along and worship with the rest of your church.
Here are 3 reasons your church isn't singing (that you can fix):
1 | Song Key
One of the reasons your church might not be singing is because your songs aren't in a singable key.
I hear differing opinions on this. Some people think that song keys don't matter. If people want to sing, they'll sing. And that's probably true in a large church context.
But, I believe things are different when you're in a small church. Song keys become more important because there isn't the same volume that there is in a larger church. If you sing in a small church... people are going to hear you.
And ultimately, we shouldn't care what we sound like to other people when we're worshiping, but we're imperfect, sinful people and we do care.
So, pick song keys that your church can sing in.
What's that mean? A good starting place is to keep the melody of the song between a low Bb and a high Eb. But, every congregation is different. So, test some keys out for different songs and see what works best.

2 | Song choice
Song choice means two things.
First, pick songs people need to sing. Create your worship set list with the people of your church in mind. Figure out what's going on in their lives that they need to respond to and pick songs based on that.
Secondly, pick songs people CAN sing. It's fun for us to play songs that are complicated but that might not be what's best for your church. Pick songs that people can easily sing along with.
3 | They don't know they're supposed to
Sometimes, it just comes to down to teaching your church.
Surprisingly, not everyone who comes to your church knows that they are expected to sing. So, teach them!
