There's a fine line between spontaneous worship and chaotic worship. It can be easy to lose your congregation when you step into the spontaneous.

Here are 3 tips to help you not lose your congregation in spontaneous worship:

1 | Prepare in advance

"That doesn't seem very spontaneous" you say? Well you're right. I believe that spontaneous worship is actually mislabeled. It's not the spontaneity that makes it powerful; it's the fact that it is Spirit-led. So really what most call spontaneous worship should be called Spirit-led worship.

With that view in mind, the truth is the Spirit doesn't just lead you when you are on stage. The Spirit of God should be integral in your entire planning process. Therefore, to come up with a part of a song that you're going to sing on Sunday beforehand does not diminish this type of worship because it's still Spirit-led. You just weren't led by the Spirit in that specific moment.

There're still benefits to creating parts in the moment but if you've never tried before, come up with a part beforehand and use it in your worship leading. 

2 | Focus on what they need to sing not what you want to say

Another temptation when leading spontaneous is to sing what feels right to us. Just because something is relevant to your life doesn't mean it's relative to everyone's. So ask the question: is what I'm about to sing applicable to the people I'm leading?

3 | Practice your musicianship

Finally, you can't be spontaneous if your musicianship isn't up to par. You lose people when you're fumbling to get to the next chord or can't put a legitimate melody together. If you're struggling with spontaneity, make sure you are prepared musically so you can properly communicate spiritually.
