Ask the Question - What Can I Do Better?
This is a question I picked up from Louie Giglio.
His team tells stories about how Louie always asks "What can I do better?" It's such a powerful question.
1 | It gives people permission to critique you
Most people are not going to just walk up to you and tell you what you could have done better but when we ask the question it gives them permission to answer.
2 | It helps us see blind spots
Simply put, other people see things that we don't see. When we ask what we can do better, we seek to see things from other people's point of view.
3 | When you ask the question, don't make excuses for the critiques you receive
"You played that first song too slow." "You were a little flat on the third song." "You rambled a bit too much when you spoke between songs." - After you ask the question, say thank you. Internalize the comments. See if there is truth to them. Implement a plan to do better next time you lead.
