The process of introducing a new song can be hard to figure out. It seems to always boil down to 1 question: how often should you introduce a new song?

Generally speaking, you can introduce a new song once a month. That means at the maximum you can introduce 12 songs to your church a year. With that being said, there are several factors to consider when introducing a new song. 

Here are 3 things to consider when it comes to how often you should introduce a new song:

1 | Give them time to learn

It takes your congregation time to learn a new song. The average church-goer doesn't go home and listen to it all week. The only time they hear it is during your church gathering when you lead it. So give them a few weeks to learn it. Depending on the song, it usually takes a church about 4 weeks to fully and confidently engage with a new song. That's where the idea that you should introduce a song no more than once a month comes from. This is just a general rule of thumb so evaluate how well your church responds to the new song each week.

2 | Have a reason to introduce a song

Don't just introduce a song to introduce a song. You should have a reason behind introducing it. Just because you CAN introduce a new song once a month doesn't mean you SHOULD. Think about why you're introducing the song. Does it match up well with the sermon series your pastor is about to head into? Have you identified a particular theme in people's lives that they need to respond to? Is there a part of your "worship theology" that needs to be emphasized more? All of these are reasons to introduce a new song.

3 | Make sure the song you introduce is good

Because you can only introduce 12 songs a year, you need to make sure the songs you're introducing are good. This means they are singable, full of truth, and understandable. Ask yourself the question: Do I think this song will still work in my church in 12 months?
