3 Ways to Build A Worship Team That Serves Alongside You
There's a danger that presents itself when you are put in charge of a team: it can be easy to start to think that the people on your team are there to serve you. You're the one with the plan and if they would just play their role - you would be able to accomplish what you want to accomplish.
The problem is that's not how good leaders lead. Leaders who lead thriving teams know that they shouldn't be building a team that serves them - they should be building a team that serves alongside them!
Here are 3 ways to build a worship team that doesn't serve you but serves ALONGSIDE you:
1 | Give them meaningful things to do
When you want someone to serve you, you give them SMALL tasks that you could do but don't think are worth your time.
When you want to serve alongside someone, you give them MEANINGFUL tasks that actually move the needle forward. Look for responsibilities you can give to people on your team that actually make an impact. Have them help plan set lists, set up the stage, or arrange a song.
2 | Give them more responsibilities
If you want your team to grow, you have to be willing to let it grow beyond your control or else you will end up being the cap.
Take it past just giving people something meaningful to do and give them actual responsibility. These are things that have the ability to make an impact - let them lead a service or let them speak between songs. You are in this together and you both have valid ways to contribute to the mission.
3 | Point them to the "why"
Constantly remind your team why they're doing what they're doing. They aren't just showing up on Sunday to play songs - they are a part of making life change happen as they allow the Holy Spirit to work through them.
If you want people to serve alongside you, make it abundantly clear that you are both following the same why.
