3 Ways To Make A New Worship Team Member Feel Welcomed

Joining a worship team can be an intimidating experience. After all, you're joining a group of people who already have a relationship and know how to work together. It can be awkward to step into something like that. That's why it's important for worship team leaders and members to make new members feel welcomed.

Here are 3 ways you can make a new worship team member feel welcomed:

1 | Make sure they have all the resources they need

The first thing you can do is make sure they're properly equipped. Make sure they've got the music they need but take it a step further than that. Think of all the things that you take for granted - the things that you and the rest of the team just do without thinking about them. There are probably a handful of processes that you and your team have adopted over the years and no longer need to talk about - make sure your new team members know about these "unspoken expectations and processes" too.

2 | Ask for their opinion on things

Asking for someone's opinion shows that you value what they have to bring to the table. When you ask for someone's opinion on something, it builds their confidence because they think, "Hey, I might actually have something to add to this conversation." It also gives your team the chance to explore new ideas. It's easy to get into a rhythm and just do what you've always done when you've been on the team for a couple years. So, having a new person join the team is a great time to get a second opinion! Next time you're trying to figure something out at rehearsal - ask the new member what they think!

3 | Ask them if they have any questions

The worship team recruitment process doesn't end when someone shows up for their first rehearsal or plays for the first time on Sunday. It's an ongoing process that lasts until they're properly assimilated into the team. One way you can continue this development process is to simply ask if they have any questions. Give them a few weeks to come to rehearsal and see how you do things - then ask what doesn't make sense or what they need clarification on.
