5 Tips for Communicating Better on Stage
When people start leading worship they often don't realize that that comes with extra responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is communicating from stage. At some point in your worship leading you will need to communicate from stage.
Here are 5 tips to help you communicate better:
1 | Prepare in Advance
Write out what you want to say in advance. The goal isn't to memorize a script before you start speaking - it's just to get your thoughts in order. Have one or two points that you want to make sure to get across and know generally how you are going to deliver them. Good leaders prepare in advance!
2 | Keep it Short
This is not your time to give a whole sermon. If you can't keep what you're saying to a minute or two, you haven't prepared enough and you aren't being concise. There will be times where it makes sense to stretch your talking longer than that but, if you prepare in advance, you won't ramble on and on. Make sure you are providing value with the words you say.
3 | Make it Applicable to Everyone
Make sure what you're talking about applies to the majority of the people you're leading. Don't leave people wondering what to do next. Give them something to think about. Direct them in prayer. Explain a line in a song. Make sure what you're saying on stage actually leads the majority of the people you're leading.
4 | Listen to recordings
Listen to recordings of when you speak on stage. You'll notice when you ramble. You'll start to hear your "crutch" words. Identify what you can do better next time and fix it!
5 | Sometimes Silence is Better
Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all. Finding the appropriate balance takes experience - while listening back to when you spoke, ask yourself the question: would it have been better to be silent in that moment? Silence draws people in and allows people to reflect. Don't feel like you always have to fill space.
