5 Tips for Leading Children in Worship

Tips for leading kids in Worship

Here are 5 things to keep in mind when leading kids in worship:

1 | Explain

The kids you're leading are learning how to worship. So, explain to them why you're doing what you're doing. Let them know you're not just singing songs because its fun but those songs are directed to God. You're celebrating the things He has done. Kids are curious - they ask questions about everything. What better questions to answer than questions about worship?

2 | Dance

Kids have energy. They want to move around. They want to be physically engaged in worship. Take a page out of King David's playbook and learn how "dancing with all your might" is an acceptable form of worship to God. Pick songs that have hand motions to them. Keep the kids moving and they will stay engaged.

3 | Don't dumb it down

Just because they're younger doesn't mean they can't grasp big concepts if those concepts are explained well. You don't have to dumb things down. You don't have to sing nursery school songs all the time. In fact, there's a beautiful connection that happens when children sing the same songs that adults sing in worship. It allows for intergenerational worship. Not to mention kids want to sing the songs that the adults are singing. It makes them feel included in the body of the church.

4 | Get buy in from the leaders

When it comes to leading worship for kids, everyone is a worship leader. The people on stage, small group leaders, and really any adult who is in the room. Children learn the most from modeling what their leaders do. So get buy-in from your children's ministry leaders. Let them know that they are setting the tone for worship in the room. If they go all out, the kids will follow!

5 | Let kids lead kids

Grab a group of kids who are super into it and let them lead. Often times, children will look to their peers for confirmation and if they see other kids their age worshiping - it lets them know that it's okay to do it too. Letting kids lead kids is a great way to build up future leaders too!
