Don't Just Fill Your Role, Own It!
There are two types of people on a worship team: those who fill a role and those who own a role. If you've been on a team for any amount of time you can instantly identify both types of people. Those people who go all in show up early, have their music memorized, and always go the extra mile. They don't just fill a role, they own it! They take ownership of their responsibility to the team.
Here are 3 ways to own your role on the worship team:
1 | Be over-prepared
Go past the point of being prepared. Think critically about your role and how you would react in different situations. What if your keyboardist was supposed to start a song but their keyboard loses power? Could you cover for them? What if that person who was supposed to lead a song gets sick on Saturday and isn't able to lead? Could you lead the song? People who own their role are over-prepared and ready for any situation that arises.
2 | Volunteer for more responsibility
People who own their role don't just meet the expectations, they exceed them. Ask for more responsibility. Offer to set up the slides for Sunday. Set aside time to disciple a new member of the team. If you don't know how you can help, ask whoever leads your team. Ask them: what do you wish you didn't have to do that I could do for you?
3 | Get feedback
People who own their role constantly look for ways to improve. You can start this process on a personal level by evaluating yourself after you lead. Ask what went well and what could be better for next time. But also take it past the personal level and ask someone else you trust. The most powerful question you can ask someone else is what can I do better next time? This gives them permission to critique you in a way they probably wouldn't if you didn't ask for it.
