How to Overcome Nerves in Worship Leading
Do you still find yourself being nervous when you lead worship? What if I sing the wrong words? What if I play the wrong chord? What if I'm not good enough?
We're all nervous when we first start leading worship. It's normal. While that nervousness might not go away instantly, there are a few things you can do to help.
Here are 3 things to help you lead worship more confidently:
1 | Prepare
Part of the problem with nerves is that they come about when you feel like you aren't prepared. So one solution to overcoming your nerves is to make sure that you are fully prepared to lead worship. This means practicing your songs to a point where you feel super comfortable playing them, knowing the lyrics, and knowing the general flow of your set so you aren't surprised by anything. The best way to overcome nerves is to simply prepare to a point where you feel comfortable enough that if anything goes wrong you could recover.
2 | Experience
There's another element of overcoming nerves that simply involves experience. This doesn't come instantly. It comes over time after leading worship for a while. As you lead worship more and more and work your way past that initial nervousness you will start to feel more comfortable. In order to become more comfortable, you have to first burst through that bubble of initial nervousness.
3 | Trust
The last thing you can do is to trust that worship doesn't depend on you. While God uses you to lead his people, he is ultimately the one in control. He has the ability to work in powerful ways even when you mess up. So trust that God is going to use your faithfulness in stepping into the uncomfortable for his glory.
