The Most Powerful Question You Can Ask In Your Worship Ministry
The most powerful question in your worship ministry:
"How are you?"
3 simple words can have a profound effect on the people you're leading and on YOU personally. In ministry, it can be easy to get caught up in a performance, task-based mindset. Did this thing get done or did it not get done? Did this person come prepared to rehearsal or did they not? Did that person get me what I needed on time or am I still waiting for it?
There are a lot of things to DO in ministry and, sometimes, that overshadows the people we are doing ministry with. How do you flip that ratio around? By asking that simple question: "How are you?"
To that person you've been angry at - "how are you?" To that guy who never comes prepared to rehearsal - "how are you?" To your pastor when they frustrate you - "how are you?"
WARNING: Often times, when you ask this question, people will brush it off. They'll say "I'm good" or "I'm fine." And they'll leave it at that. That's your chance to push a bit further and say, "No. How are you REALLY doing?"
People aren't used to someone genuinely asking that question and actually caring what the other person says. So, ask the question and actually listen and care about what the other person says.
Here are 3 reasons you should be asking "how are you?" more often in your worship ministry:
1 | It helps you understand what's going on in that person's life
Usually the things that other people do that frustrate us are not the problem in and of itself. It is a symptom of a larger thing going on in their life. When you ask "how are you?", You gain insight into what is really going on in that person's life.
2 | It enables you to build a deeper connection with the person you ask
"How are you?", when asked genuinely, shows that you care. It shows that you actually want to know the person you ask better. It gives them permission to open up and, in the process, deepens your connection.
3 | It turns bitterness, frustration, and resentment into love and compassion
Once you understand what's going on in people's lives, your frustrations, bitterness, and resentment turn into love and compassion. You take your eyes off the TASKS and put them on the PERSON.
