What to do When Your Mind Wanders While Leading Worship
Have you ever had one of those moments when you're leading worship and you realize you're not even thinking about the songs that you're singing? You're thinking about what you're going to have for lunch. Or some other responsibility you have to take care of after church. It happens to all of us. So what can you do when your mind wanders while leading worship?
Here are 3 things you can do when your mind wanders:
1 | Recognize that you can't worship God without relying on the Spirit
The first thing to do is to confess to God and remind yourself that you can't worship without the Spirit. It's impossible. It takes full reliance on the Holy Spirit to do anything related to worship. So instead of thinking about what restaurant you're going to go to after church, think about that theological truth. Pray and ask that the Spirit would refocus you on God.
2 | Focus on Truth
After you've reminded yourself that you can't worship without the Spirit, start focusing on the truth of the song you're singing. What is the song saying? How does it relate to your life? How does it relate to the lives of the people you're leading? How does it relate to the direction your pastor wants to take your church?
Answer these questions and you'll refocus.
3 | Sing it for People
Corporate worship is not just about you and God. It's also about the people around you and, when you're the leader, it's about the people you're leading. So don't just make it about yourself. Start singing the lyrics over people. Glance over at that guy in the back row who came to church for the first time in 2 years and sing Reckless Love over him. Make eye contact with that single mom and believe that God is faithful in her situation. Believe it for them! Sing it over them!
