3 Quick Tips For Worship Songwriters

3 Quick Tips For Worship Songwriters

Here are 3 quick tips for worship songwriters:

1 | Write a lot of bad songs

I hate to break it to you but, if you've never written a song before, your first one is probably not going to be very good. In fact, your eleventh one probably won't be very good either.

Songwriting is a skill just like any other that needs to be developed. Think about when you first started playing an instrument. Those first few months of practice sounded horrible. But, the more you did it, the better you got.

The same is true with songwriting - the more you do it the better you get.

So, don't be too harsh on yourself when you first start writing songs. No one is good at the beginning. It takes time.

But the key to developing your songwriting skill is by doing it over and over and over again - and, consequently, that means writing a lot of bad songs before you finally write a good one.

2 | Write what your church needs to sing

Worship songwriters have a unique challenge - their goal is to write songs people will sing. Other songwriters might try to write songs to entertain people or to connect with them but, as worship leaders, our goal is to give people words to sing as worship to God.

How do you fulfill that goal? You write what your church NEEDS to sing and not just what you want to say.

So, as you're writing, think about what's going on in the life of your church.

Start by viewing the big picture. What's happening in the life of your church as a whole? Is there a specific season you sense that you're in? Is there anything specific God is doing in the life of your church that you need to respond to?

Then, you can also think about the lives of the people in your church. What's happening in your church body? What truth do they need to hear and respond to?

Use the answers to those questions to figure out what your church needs to sing.

3 | Find someone to write with

We're better together! And that's true when it comes to songwriting. Find a co-writer and start bouncing ideas off of each other. As you do, your songwriting will improve.
