3 Tips For Picking Worship Songs People Want To Sing
Ever introduce a new song to your church and it just falls flat? Even though you've committed to the process of teaching your church the song, you've led it every week for a month and they're still not into it.
But... the next time you introduce a song to your church, something different happens. It's your first time leading it in your church and people start singing along by the second chorus! What gives? What's the difference between these two scenarios?
Well, maybe your church just didn't connect with the first song. Maybe they didn't want to sing it (for any number of reasons). So, how can you pick songs that the people of your church actually want to sing?
Here are 3 tips for picking worship songs people want to sing:
1 | Pick songs that allow them to respond to what's going on in their lives
Look: you can pick any song to lead in your church that has strong theological truth behind it and call it a "good song." But, that's only the first part of the process of picking songs for your church. If you want to pick songs that your church wants to sing, you have to pick songs your church NEEDS to sing.
It starts with picking theologically sound songs but then taking it a step further and focusing on relevancy. Is the song relevant to the season your church is in? How do you know what season your church is in? Get to know the people around you! What's going on in their lives? What's going on in the life of the collective church? And how can you pick songs that are not only true, but also allow people to respond specifically to what's going on in their lives?
2 | Test out songs you wouldn't normally choose
It's alright to test out songs you wouldn't normally pick to lead at your church. Maybe these songs have a different structure or style than what you'd usually do. Don't be afraid to try something new because you think your church "can't handle it." You might just discover that they can handle a lot more than you give them credit for.
3 | Connect the dots
Sometimes people don't "want" to sing a song because they don't understand it. So, start by showing them what it means and how it applies to their life. Connect the dots for them!
