4 Questions To Ask When Writing Songs For Your Church
Every church has a unique voice. There are specific things going on in the lives of the people of your church that need to be responded to. That's why it's so powerful to write songs for your own church. You may not be the best songwriter in the world but only you can write songs that respond directly to what's going on in the life of your church.
Maybe you agree but don't know where to start. Answer the following questions and you will know what words you need to write for your church to sing.
Here are 4 questions to ask when writing songs for your church:
1 | What's going on in the lives of the people in my church?
Take a look at the lives of the people in your church. What's the common thread? Is there a specific thing that the majority of the people in your church need to respond to? Is there a church-wide initiative you're focusing on in this season? These are the perfect things to write a song for. Give your people words to sing that directly relate to the season they're going through.
2 | What truth of God do they need to respond to?
Now that you know what you're responding to, the goal is not to simply write words that make people feel comfortable. The goal of writing songs for the church is to respond to God's truth together. Take a look at what you know about God - his attributes, his promises, etc - and use those truths as the basis for your song.
3 | If I was in their situation, what's one thing I know I should say but wouldn't know how to?
You have the circumstance you're responding to. You have the general truth you want to convey. Now, how do you come up with the words? Think about if you were in that same circumstance (maybe you are - you're part of your church after all...). What is something true that you know you should say but wouldn't know how to? Craft that statement and use it to inform the rest of your song.
4 | What circumstances have I experienced in life that are similar to theirs? How can I use that experience as inspiration?
In the end, you need inspiration. Songwriting works best when it comes from a place of authenticity. Reflect back on circumstances you've gone through before and use those as inspiration.
