1 | Open Your Eyes
Think about the last time you led worship: What was the ratio of the amount of time your eyes were open to the amount of time they were closed? For most people, it's around 75% closed and only 25% open. Focus on flipping that ratio so your eyes are open 75% of the time and closed only 25%. Opening your eyes allows you to do two things: connect with the people that you're leading and gauge the room.
2 | Practice Your Transitions
Don't just practice the songs for Sunday, practice your transitions too! This goes for both musical and speaking transitions. When it comes to musical transitions, figure out how you're going to get to the next song. When it comes to speaking transitions, write down what you're going to say - that way you won't ramble when you lead.
3 | Connect the Dots
Don't expect people to instantly know what's going on when you lead worship. Connect the dots for them. Let them in on what's going on. Maybe you picked four songs that all talk about the love of God and you think everyone is going to notice - THEY WON'T! So talk about it in a transition.
4 | Communicate with your pastor
Coordinate with your pastor to support their vision for the worship gathering. Musical worship and teaching can both be amazing on their own but imagine the impact they can have when they work to support each other. Talk to your pastor about their vision for Sunday and work to support it!
5 | Watch how others lead worship
There are 10s of thousands of churches that stream their worship services. Pick a few and watch them throughout the week. Take notice of what you like about how the person leads and what they could do better. Then take what you've learned and apply it to your own leading. Not to mention, by watching others you can get new ideas and see how people do things differently.
