Buying More Gear Won't Make You a Better Musician
Do you feel like you need to constantly buy new gear to make you a better musician? If you just had a better guitar, you know that you'd sound better. If you just had Ableton and could run click tracks, your band would be where you want them to be. If you just had x, y, z, that's what it would take to take you to the next level.
Here are 3 reasons buying more gear won't make you a better musician:
1 | It's not your gear, it's how you use it
Learn to use what you have. Your $300 guitar will work just fine. Your 16 channel analog board is more than sufficient for you to lead worship by yourself with an acoustic guitar - the preamps on that Midas M32 won't make you sound better. 90% of what you sound like comes from you! It's how you play that $300 guitar. It's your vocal technique. If you buy more gear before you learn how to adequately use what you have, you will be disappointed that you sound the same when you get that new gear.
2 | More just means more - not better
Buying more things just means you have more things. If you don't understand the basics on what you're currently using, you won't be able to properly use the next step up in equipment. Not only that, but the more things you have the more confusing it gets. That 16 channel board you've got that only has EQ and no other effects? If you don't learn how to use EQ, upgrading your board is only going to add more effects you don't know how to use.
3 | You can improve your sound by 90% for free!
Surprisingly, the most beneficial things for you to learn are free. 90% of your sound comes from you! That means you can control it AND it's FREE! All it takes is a little work. The problem is most people think they can substitute gear for learning the basics. Don't be that person. Identify the root problem of your playing and find the technique that will solve that problem. Don't buy things, learn things.
