How to Care for Your Voice - Guest Post - Susan Browning
As a vocal coach for the past 16 years I’ve come across many people who are keen to learn the importance of looking after their voice.
Many factors contribute to how your voice functions: how much sleep you’ve had, sickness or recovery, how often you use your voice, using your voice correctly/incorrectly, seasons (pollens/illness), even air conditioning can dry your vocal cords out.
Your instrument isn’t like a guitar or piano, you can’t pick it up & expect it be 110% reliable every time. It’s part of your body & as singers we need to view the voice holistically.
Here are some tips to keep it in great condition:
1 | Always warm-up before you sing
10-15 minutes is a good place to start. Find what works well for you & your setting. Start with sirens using “ng” sound from your lowest note to a mid pitch, then extend into your upper register. I use Chris Beatty’s Low Voice warm up in the car before rehearsals and most mornings.
2 | Hydrate: before, during & after
Your vocal cords work their best when they are plump, moist & fully connected. Take sips of water or herbal tea throughout your rehearsals & services so they function at their best.
3 | Avoid singing without amplification or talking in loud environments
When talking be mindful to raise the pitch slightly & try to place the voice in the front of the face rather than at the back engaging in glottal fry. Avoid whispering too – it’s worse than shouting!
The gift you have been given is one to be stewarded well, so look after it! Happy Singing!
