How to Stop Doing It All

How to stop doing it all

Do you ever feel like you're overwhelmed with the amount of responsibility that you have at church? From creating slides to leading rehearsal to picking songs for the week to developing your team to leading worship. The list goes on and on but what if there was a better way? What if you didn't have to do it all? In fact, what if the better way for the church to function was for you to do half of the things that you're doing right now?

Here are 3 steps to stop doing it all:

1 | Kill your pride

There are two sides to your need to do it all and the first always stems from pride. As much as we don't like to admit it, we like getting the credit. We like receiving the compliments and knowing that whatever happened, we were responsible for it. So you've got to kill your pride. You've got to get to a place where it brings you just as much joy seeing other people succeed as you do when you succeed.

2 | Build the team

The other side of your need to do it all is that you don't have the team to fulfill the role that you're doing. No one else knows how to set up the lyrics for the weekend. No one else is at a level where they can lead worship. You've got to build the team. Identify one thing that you can give away. Something that you don't need to be doing and find a person to fill that role. Give someone a role that fits there skill set not just because you don't want to do it anymore.

3 | Trust them

Finally, you have to trust them to do what you've given them to do. Start out small and slowly ramp up the responsibilities once they've shown they can be trusted. Have them lead one song on Sunday. Then two. And so on until they're ready to lead a whole service. Or have someone help you pick out your set list for this week. Then eventually allow them to put the whole list together. This is how leaders are developed in the church!
