How to Transition Between Worship Songs - Just Do It - Part 1

How to transition between worship songs

Over the next few weeks we'll be taking a look at transitions.

This is often a part of worship leading that new worship leaders struggle with and even seasoned worship leaders forget about.

A lack of transition leaves an awkward empty space that may distract your congregation from worship. Therefore, it's important to know how to properly utilize transitions!

There are a few different ways to transition and because of that we tend to overthink them.

Let's start simple: JUST DO IT!

Don't overthink it. Just transition from one song to the next song in a timely matter. End one song and have a new instrument start the next song in the new key.

This is something I've started implementing in my worship leading and it is honestly not as bad as people make it out to be. You can transition from a song in the key of A to a song in the key of C# by simply ending the first song and starting the next one.

If you want to take it to the next level, have your drummer do some cymbal swells behind the key change (I picked that tip up from @mr_gilder - Chris Tomlin's keyboard player and musical director). You can also end the song and swell in a pad for a softer transition.

We'll head into music theory in future posts but for now simply work on the timing of your transitions.
