3 Ways Knowing Your Church Improves Your Worship Leading

3 Ways Knowing Your Church Improves Your Worship Leading

On a scale from 1-10, how well do you know your church?

Your church is made up of people. And if you want to lead worship well, you have to lead those people well. That means knowing them.

Each church is unique. There are different challenges. There are different cultures. There are different seasons that you're walking through.

And each of these elements of knowing your church, can help improve your worship leading. Knowing what's going on in your church and the lives of the people of your church helps you lead them more specifically.

Here are 3 ways knowing your church improves your worship leading:

1 | It informs your song selection

We should be picking songs that our church NEEDS to sing - not just songs that we like.

The songs you sing in corporate worship are your opportunity to respond to what God is doing in the life of your church. It's not a general response - it's a SPECIFIC response to what's happening. But, in order to respond specifically, you have to actually know what's going on in the life of your church.

Is there something to celebrate? Pick some songs that celebrate.

Is there a specific attribute of God that needs to be highlighted because of a unique circumstance in your church? Pick some songs that highlight that characteristic.

2 | It informs your speaking transitions

If you've ever struggled to know what to say between worship songs, start by getting to know the people of your church better. This allows you to speak into their situations.

Ask yourself: what's going on in the life of my church and what truth of God do people need to hear in response to that?

Then, preach. Lead them to that truth and give them time to respond to it.

3 | It's how you connect with the people you're leading

If you don't know the people you're leading, you won't be able to connect with them on a deeper level. And that's one of the biggest questions worship leaders have: How do I connect with the people I'm leading?

The truth is the best time to connect with the people you're leading in worship is not in the hour long time slot you have on a Sunday morning - it's the other 167 hours of the week.
