4 Ways To Engage People Who Only Come To Church Once A Year
There's no other way to put it: there ARE going to be people who come to your church this week who only come once a year. The question is: how are you going to respond to them? Are you going to ignore them and only focus on the people who regularly come? Or is there a better way where you can serve everyone who shows up? There are a few things you can do to engage the people who come to your church this weekend!
Here are 4 ways to engage people who only come to church once a year:
1 | Challenge don't condemn
It's easy to fall into the mindset of condemning people who don't come to church regularly. But instead of condemning them, try offering a challenge to them. As you lead worship, create a moment where people can dip their toe into the uncomfortable. Challenge them to step into something that might allow them to encounter God in a way they never have before.
2 | Include familiar songs
Challenges are good but it's also important to include an element of familiarity. Luckily Christmas has tons of familiar songs. There are dozens of songs that people who have never even been to church before might be familiar with. Include some of these songs in your service to make people feel welcomed.
3 | Introduce yourself!
There are going to be a lot of new people at your church this weekend. Take a moment to introduce yourself. People are more likely to follow you if they know who you are. This goes for on and off the stage. Try to meet as many people as possible before you lead. Then, once you're up front, at least let people know your name.
4 | Invite them back!
Don't forget to invite people to come back next Sunday! It's easy to forget to do that when you're someone who is constantly at church but some people need that invitation. When you invite someone to come back again next Sunday you're communicating that they're welcome any time - not just on Christmas and Easter!
