5 Traditional Christmas Songs That Are Worship Songs
If there's one thing we can teach the Church about worship this Christmas season, it's that: Christmas songs are worship songs. #christmassongsareworshipsongs
So often during the Christmas season, people come to church expecting to sing the Christmas songs they know and love. They're excited because they actually know how these songs go. They might not know the newest Hillsong song or Bethel's latest 20 minute spontaneous worship moment. But, by golly, they know Joy To The World and they're going to sing it at the top of their lungs because they want to have a holly jolly Christmas this year.
And that's a wonderful spot to be in as worship leader. It means that YOU can lead songs that people actually know how to sing this Christmas season.
The problem is: that over-familiarity, coupled with the nostalgia of Christmas songs, makes it easy for the people of your church to simply see the songs you're leading as "feel good moments that remind them of their childhood." And instead of recognizing that the words they're singing can be worship, they turn their brains on auto-pilot and simply spew forth the familiar melodies.
But, as a worship leader, you know that the purpose of the church gathering isn't to just SING SONGS. It's to WORSHIP God. And that means that it's your responsibility to teach your church that #christmassongsareworshipsongs.
Now, obviously that's not true for every Christmas song. So you have to be careful in your Christmas song selection and make sure that the songs you're leading are actually CONGREGATIONAL worship songs.
So, to help with that discernment, here are 5 traditional Christmas songs that are worship songs:
1 | Joy To The World
2 | O Come All Ye Faithful
3 | Hark The Herald Angels Sing
4 | Oh Holy Night
5 | Silent Night
Later this week on the LWW YouTube channel, I'm going to be giving you a speaking transition for each of these songs that you can use to teach your church that #christmassongsareworshipsongs.
But for now, let's help each other out, what traditional Christmas song do you consider to be a worship song? Let us know BELOW!
