3 Ways To Help A Worship Vocalist Become More Confident
Do you have a vocalist on your team who is really good but just needs to be more confident? Confidence is one of the biggest problems for new team members. It feels awkward for them to sing in front of people because they aren't used to it. The result is a timid voice that has technique issues simply because they aren't singing out confidently. A timid vocalist has trouble hitting notes, leading with energy, and blending with other members of the team.
Here are 3 ways you can help a worship vocalist become confident:
1 | Give them real responsibility
If you never give a worship vocalist real responsibility - they will never have the opportunity or need to become confident. Here are a few examples of NOT giving a vocalist real responsibilities: keeping their volume low, not giving them specific direction on what parts you want them to sing, etc.
Giving them real responsibility doesn't mean that they have to sing lead on a song (although that is a real responsibility) - it could simply be giving them a specific harmony to sing on a chorus. Or it could be simply telling them to sing the melody along with the lead vocalist on the 2nd chorus. These are specific responsibilities that the vocalist can own.
2 | Work with them one-on-one
Often times new vocalists are not confident because they just don't know what to do. They don't know what parts they're supposed to sing. They don't know what their role on the team is. This is the perfect time to sit down with them one-on-one and explain these things to them. Everyone becomes more confident when their questions are answered and they have a clearer picture of what they're supposed to do.
3 | Give them time
In the end, it really just takes time for a vocalist to become confident. Think back to when you first started leading worship - you probably weren't confident for the first 20 times you led. But after that, slowly but surely, you become more and more confident. If you have a vocalist who isn't confident yet, utilize tip 1 and 2 but don't forget to have patience - this takes time!
